If you've ever had a flat tire, you know just how comforting it is to have a spare tire that’s properly inflated, in good shape, and easy to access. Unfortunately, many of us don't give much thought to our spare tire (if we even have one).
For those with an SUV or truck, the spare might be mounted outside the vehicle, like on the tailgate or underneath. These spots, especially underneath, face a lot of debris, moisture, salt, and dirt from the road, which can lead to corrosion. The hardware holding these spares can rust, making removing them challenging for you or even a roadside assistance service.
If you're one of the lucky ones with a spare, be sure to get it checked and maintained at your vehicle repair facility regularly. They should be lubricated and cleaned periodically, and some experts suggest doing this every time your tires are rotated. If your spare is the same size as your vehicle's tires, it might be wise to rotate it with the others.
Some cars come with compact spares in a small well in the trunk or another location. Most drivers tend to overlook them, but air can leak over time, leaving them flat when you need them most. During your vehicle's service or routine maintenance, consider asking your service advisor for advice on ensuring the spare is properly inflated and cleaned—ideally, at least twice a year.
You may be surprised to learn that your vehicle does not have a spare! Instead, it could come with an inflator kit to inflate and seal a flat tire. Remember that this sealant has a limited lifespan and should be replaced every few years. It’s a good idea to check in with your service advisor to ensure the kit is current and ready to go when needed.
Manufacturers know a flat tire's always a possibility. No matter what contingency solution they've included with your vehicle, please keep it in shape and good working order. When you need it, you'll be happy you did.
